Pubs, Bars, Cafe's and Restaurants

This page is broken down into 3 sections.
The first section lists my favourite eating pubs in the area.
The second section lists all my favourite drinking pubs in the area.

Favourite Eating Pubs Around Scarborough...
Having eaten in many places in and around the Scarborough area, there are too many to list here and some of them are not worth a mention, but I am not here to degrade establishments... I will leave it for you to decide if you sample them.
As everyone's expectations and requirements are different, the recommendations below may not suit you, but you will be hard pressed to locate anywhere better for the money... (and remember, this is only my humble opinion)!
So please find below a selection of my favourites. They are not '2 for a fiver' diners so don't expect to take the family and only spend twenty quid, but they are quality food establishments and I recommend them for good food and ambiance.

Click on the pub names to acquire further information via their own websites.

Good Eating Pubs
  • The Bryherstones Country Inn
The Bryherstones Country Inn is a country pub that caters for all.  It's located approx a mile up the Ravenscar road from Cloughton, North of Scarborough.  There is a family room at the rear with a small pool and darts room, a stable bar in the middle and a more formal restaurant area to the right of the bar.  There is a beer garden round the back with a small children's play area so drinking outside on a sunny day is pleasant.  The welcome is always warm and friendly.  The menu is classic but quality pub food, with seasonal 'specials' which change regularly. All in all, highly recommended.

  • The Blacksmiths Arms
The Blacksmiths Arms is located on the main road which runs through Cloughton just North of Scarborough.
It comprises of a general room to the rear of the building (accessible straight from the car park), a room to the front of the building which generally full of eating clients and laid out as such, then a further restaurant room to the side of the building.  In my opinion, the front room (where the bar is) is the best option as the restaurant area is like sitting in someone's parlour (if it is not busy).  If the room is busy, it creates a much better atmosphere.
Having said that, the food is generally very good.  Again, not a '2 for a fiver' establishment, but general pub food and set to high quality.
The staff provide a warm welcome and the landlord will gladly share their experiences of the Queen's visit (when she called in for a pint of best) which is recorded and well presented in a delightful album.

  • The Hayburn Wyke Inn
The Hayburn Wyke Inn is accessed from the road to Ravenscar from Cloughton.  It is also accessible from the disused railway line which runs from Scarborough to Whitby.
It is very much a family pub with good food being served but it's recommended to check the opening times before making plans.  The Theakston's Old Peculiar is the preferred drink of choice (for me) and well worth a visit for that reason.
The food is general pub food at reasonable prices and a large menu board in the main room provides plenty of options to cater for all tastes.  There is plenty of outside seating with a large play area for the children so sitting outside on a sunny day is very enjoyable.
A short walk through the woods (behind the pub) to the pebble beach is recommended as is the access to the old railway line, and when used with push bikes, the pub creates a welcome break from the cycling... especially on a hot day.

  • The Blue Crush Bar
The Blue Crush bar is situated in Scarborough's North bay underneath The Sands complex.
It caters for all tastes and is more easily accessible than the the other pubs listed above as you don't need a vehicle to get there.  There is a good selection of food and provides evening entertainment regularly. Meal deals and loyalty points are available and most mains are under £10.
A good place to sit outside and people watch if that is your thing.
The Blue Crush will arrange function evenings as required.

Whilst there are many eating places and pubs in this area, many of them very enjoyable and worthy of a mention, the ones listed above are only a small selection of our favourites and its worth noting that if we dine out, we expect good food.
Good food these days comes at a price and that's usually reflected in the bill.

Drinking Pubs
If a decent pub or cheap beer is your thing, then please find below a list of my favourites in the Scarborough area to get either cheap beer or a decent pint.
The Leeds Arms
26 St Marys Street, Scarborough, North Yorkshire YO11 1QW.
No Website.
Cosy warm welcoming pub usually with a couple of real ales on tap.
Quiz night is worth a visit on Monday nights.

The Lord Rosebery
85-87 Westborough, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO11 1JW
Part of the JD Wetherspoon chain, there is usually many different beers and real ales to whet your appetite.
Gets very busy and quite noisy at times but the cheap beer and food compensates for that.

The Old Scalby Mills
Scalby Mills Road, Scarborough Y012 6RP
Small pub located at the extreme North of the town on the coast just behind the Sea Life Centre where Scalby Beck meets the sea.
Usually 2 or 3 guest beers available and decent food (cold beef sandwich is good) combined with a small outside seating area makes this pub enjoyable on a sunny day.
"Dog & Sprog" friendly.

The Golden Ball
31, Sandside, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO11 1PG
Part of the Sam Smiths brewery, the beer is very cheap.
A cosy welcoming pub but not much room in the best front room with views over the harbour. A window seat is a must. Plenty of seating to the rear room and downstairs (only open when busy).

Further drinking pubs worth a mention...
The Tap and Spile
94 Falsgrave Road, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO12 5AZ
No Website, decent food and regularly has music events.

The Commercial Pub
83 Falsgrave Rd, Town Centre, Scarborough YO12 5EG

North Riding Brew Pub
